Bee balm

A hummingbird favorite, Monarda didyma has bright red tubular flowers with green, square stems. The plant spreads by self-seeding and rhizomes. Does best in moist to wet soils in full sun to part shade.

Native Americans used this plant as an antiseptic, to treat minor wounds and skin infections, as well as making a tea from the leaves. Today, the leaves are still used to make tea and for salads.
