A classic grass of the tall grass prairies, Andropogon gerardii (big bluestem) tolerates a wide variety of soils in full sun. This warm season grass has a fibrous root system and produces rhizomes. The extensive root system makes it good for erosion control.
Big bluestem is a good grass for livestock foliage. Caterpillars of several skippers, as well as grasshoppers, also enjoy feeding on the foliage.
