Named for Swedish nurseryman Magnus Nilsson, Echinacea purpurea ‘Magnus’ has broad, violet red petals that are arranged more horizontally than that of the wild species. Nilsson carefully selected the traits of this plant for over ten years. In 1998, the Perennial Plant Association selected this plant as the Perennial Plant of the Year.
An easy plant to grow, E. purpurea ‘Magnus’ is tough and heat and drought tolerant once established. The plant prefers well-drained soil and full sun. The plant makes for a great cut flower and attracts many butterflies and songbirds.
